What is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?

What Happens During a Session?

We know that pelvic health is a personal topic, which is why we prioritize your comfort and consent at every step.

  • The Discussion: We start in a private room to discuss your current concerns, history, goals, and your daily routines.

  • External Assessment: As indicated, we assess joint mobility and position, muscle strength, muscle tone and flexibility, posture, balance, movement strategies, and more.

  • Internal Assessment: If appropriate, we perform a specialized internal assessment to check muscle tone, strength, and coordination. This provides the most accurate "roadmap" for your care, but it is never mandatory.

  • The Game Plan: We finish by creating a strategy that fits your lifestyle. No "homework" that takes an hour—just small, impactful shifts.

The "Shift" Philosophy

Care designed by Dr. Shaley looks at the whole person, which is essential to addressing the root cause of symptoms. Treating issues in isolation often leads to only short term results or lingering symptoms. The following is addressed to the root cause of your symptoms:

  • Breathing mechanics and pressure management

  • Muscle strength and coordination

  • Posture, body mechanics, and motor control

  • Lifestyle factors including diet and sleep

  • Nervous system regulation

Your symptoms and your current time commitment are unique. Dr. Shaley customizes your treatment plan, session duration, and visit frequency to meet your specific physical goals while respecting your schedule.

Programs and interventions completed during sessions are modified at each visit and you will never have a laundry list of exercises to complete at home. We’re here to help you heal in a way that is sustainable for your lifestyle.

Common Myths:

  • Pelvic floor dysfunction can affect people of all ages and genders—not just women or older adults. Men, athletes, postpartum individuals, and even younger people can experience issues like pain, leakage, and constipation.

  • Reality: While they are common, they are treatable at any age.

  • Reality: While helpful, we can make incredible progress through addressing the system surrounding the pelvic floor.

  • Reality: We treat everything from "mystery" hip pain to athletic performance and preparation for surgery.
